Computers in Your Closet?
Recycle Responsibly with Goodwill

Technology is improving every day. Today’s computers are quickly leaving yesterday’s systems in the past — or in your closet, basement or attic.

Goodwill of the Berkshires makes it easy for area residents to recycle used computer equipment. In 2011, households all over the Berkshires and Southern Vermont decluttered their closets and basements, garages and attics and brought over 100,000 pounds of old computers, printers, monitors and other computer peripherals to the Goodwill Donation centers. Thanks to the Dell Reconnect™ partnership, all this equipment found new life through repurposing or was safely recycled and kept out of our landfills.

Since 2004, Dell Reconnect has recycled more than 230 million pounds of end-of-life computer equipment, helping Dell toward its global goal of recycling 1 billion pounds of computer equipment by 2014. At Goodwill of the Berkshires, the partnership provides on-site job training and skill assessments in a real work environment under the observation of the workforce development staff.

“We expect to see an increase in used computer donations as more and more people in the community learn about our e-waste recycling program,” says William Hall, Goodwill’s Director of Facilities, “In addition to the job training opportunities, we are looking at its potential for increasing green jobs here in the Berkshires.”

Computer equipment is accepted at any of the Goodwill stores in the region or the Tyler St. training center in Pittsfield. The list of acceptable items is available at www.goodwill-berkshires.org/reconnect, along with locations and phone numbers of the donation centers.
